Hydrogen, an energy source for the future, Professor Rex Harris. University of Birmingham

Professor Harris will open his talk with a review of climate change and the
stark realities of energy sources in the future. We cannot
continue to rely on the finite resources of fossil fuels.
Hydrogen will never be a primary energy source but is best regarded as a very efficient storage medium. Most sustainable energy sources such as wind, sun and tide have fluctuating outputs; demand fluctuates through day and night, so an efficient method of storing peak electricity is essential. Hydrogen fulfils that need though electrolysis, but we then have to use energy in this medium. The internal combustion engine can be made to work with hydrogen, but the fuel cell is a far more efficient system. The technology will be explained and also the design of high efficiency electric motors using Rare-Earth magnet technology. Finally two current projects; the "Microcab" and the Prontium boat project- both hydrogen powered, will be reviewed.

(The Microcab project was given the "environmental Award" by the Worshipful Company of Carmen this year)

Professor I Rex Harris: Professor of Materials Science. Leader - Applied Alloy Chemistry Group.
Professor Rex Harris is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He has specialised in the use of Hydrogen as an alloying element in industrial applications. Recently he has worked on the application of Hydrogen as a fuel and its application in Transport.
